Common Conversion Mistakes

Confusing mass (kg) with force (N or kgf)

Weight is a force (kg × 9.81 m/s²), not a mass. An object with mass 10 kg weighs 98.1 N (or 10 kgf) on Earth, but only 16.3 N on the Moon. In everyday speech, 'weight' often means mass — but in physics, they are different.

Assuming 1 kgf = 1 N

1 kilogram-force = 9.80665 N, not 1 N. This confusion causes significant errors in structural calculations.

Mixing up dyne and newton scale

1 N = 100,000 dynes. The CGS dyne is used in older physics literature; SI uses the newton. Forgetting this factor of 100,000 leads to massive numerical errors.
